Geese and goslings on patrol

Our evening walk took us along the River Bain, the shortest main river in the UK, where we came across a well organised gaggle of geese and goslings.

There is remarkable cooperation within the group, to provide as much protection as possible against natural predators, with adult birds at the front rear and in between the goslings.

However, from the evidence on the river bank this protective formation has not prevented some of them being shot.

Still, there are sufficient numbers of young birds here to ensure they will not become extinct any time soon.
